Giving Crew Day marks the anniversary of our very first day of Polaris, when we opened our doors as school in 2007 to serve students and families in West Humboldt Park! We invite our Polaris friends and supporters—our Crew—to join us on our community day of giving and make a gift to support our mission and the transformative work we do. This year’s Giving Crew Day is dedicated to supporting Sitework (formerly Fieldwork).
Sitework is a cornerstone of every Polaris students’ education. Sitework takes students beyond the classroom and immerses them in real-world experiences to learn from experts. It is purposeful work that connects classroom learning with real-world experiences. Through sitework, students take ownership of their learning and create thoughtful, high-quality projects that showcase their critical thinking and active citizenship. Sitework brings learning to life, sparking curiosity and expanding students’ view of the world and even changing how they think about themselves. Sitework is transformative. These hands-on experiences deeply connect students to their community, enriching their education and character development in meaningful ways.
As we kick off our 18th school year, we invite you to support these invaluable hands-on experiences by making a tax-deductible gift on Giving Crew Day. Whether it’s covering a site entry fee ($8+ per student, $200+ a group) or the cost of a bus ($300), every gift makes a difference. Please help us reach our $15,000 goal. Last year, Polaris students embarked on nearly 50 sitework excursions. On day or overnight sitework, students have learned from experts at the Adler Planetarium, Black Ensemble Theater, Lyric Opera, Illinois Holocaust Museum, Field Museum, Chicago Poetry Foundation, Art Institute of Chicago, Studio W.I.P., Friends of the Chicago River, Foot Soldiers of the Children’s March in Birmingham, AL, the University of Florida, and more.
