Dear Friend of Polaris,

Polaris Charter Academy is more than a school, it is home. My mother transferred me to Polaris in 5th grade. My previous schools were not safe places for learning. Teachers did not have control of the classrooms or care about the students. Even though I lived across the street from my neighborhood school, I woke up each morning at 5 a.m. and took two buses to get to Polaris because soon after I started, I knew it was the best school for me. They focused on developing my character and spent time getting to know who I was as a person and learner. While there, I learned what is possible for me. I learned that I am a mathematician and a poet. I learned I am an Active Citizen and Compassionate person who likes to help people and give back to my community.

I wasn’t always this way. I used to hang out with the boys in my neighborhood who were up to no good. I witnessed the cycle of skipping school, then dropping out, selling drugs or struggling to get by, and part of me thought that was my inevitable path, but Polaris changed that. Ms. Navarre and the teachers helped me think bigger about myself and my future. The staff really cares about the children. They take the time to build strong relationships with students and treat all of the kids with respect. The staff has the highest expectations for each and every child, and they never give up on you. They hold you accountable for your choices, but they are always there for you no matter what. At Polaris, I learned that my Integrity is my identity and that I choose my path in this life. I also learned that I am really smart, and that with hard work and effort, I can accomplish just about anything.

Without Polaris, I would never be where I am today. Ms. Navarre and my teachers saw something special in me and helped me to discover it in myself. They encouraged me and helped me grow.  Because of Polaris, I was able to win a Daniel Murphy Scholarship so I could go to a great high school. Polaris put me in a position to be successful. Today, I am a junior at DePaul College Prep, I am on the honor roll with a 3.7 GPA, and I am exploring engineering programs at a Big Ten college, hopefully on a wrestling scholarship. None of this would be possible without Polaris. While I was there, I learned what is possible for me. I see the power of my voice and that I can make a difference.

Thank you for supporting Polaris and making a difference to students like me.
