5th Grade students conquer the Civil War

In the spring of 2011, our fifth graders dove into American history in their writing-intensive expedition on slavery and the Civil War.

Fifth grade crews tackled these highly charged topics through the lens of perspectives, with each student selecting a role of the time period in which to study the Civil War.

Using primary source information as a guide, students explored different view points, writing about what they learn from multiple perspectives. Students went on overnight fieldwork to a Civil War re-enactment in Keokuk, IA, journeyed to Springfield to visit Abraham Lincoln’s museum, and culminated their expedition with publishing a book of monologues, creating a website to share their learnings, as well as performing their monologues to a live audience!
